New York City health officials said Friday all New Yorkers should wear high-quality face masks indoors and near crowds due to a rise in COVID-19 cases.
"We're currently seeing high levels of COVID-19 in NYC," the city's Department of Health said in a tweet recommending N95, KN95 or KF94 masks for the public.
When the omicron variant first emerged last November, many doctors, researchers and scientists hoped that the new strain — while more transmissible — would cause fewer deaths.

New Hampshire health officials said Tuesday that the state is now averaging 434 reported new cases per day, the highest rate since Feb. 15. The rate of new cases has risen 231% since April 2.
There are 3,128 known active cases of COVID-19 in the state, the most since Feb. 16.
